TuxGuitar Linux alternative to the tool mentioned above. Cross-platform.
FL Studio (multiple flavors) Digital Audio Workstation for Windows and Mac with Bootcamp.
Easy Music Composer Tool that provides many convenient ways to compose music.

Design
Xampp Free, open source and cross-platform web server package for testing one’s work (web site design) without access to the Internet.
Game Design FAQs Great resource for those wishing to make a game.
Xpadder Freeware program that has the ability to emulate a mouse and/or keyboard using a controller or joystick.
ControllerMate v4 Free software for customizing controller behavior for MAC OS X. Similar to Xpadder.

Visual Basic 6 The most prevalent language in 2D MORPG development.
DirectX4VB Useful source for DirectX and multimedia prgramming in Visual Basic.
Dev-C++ Full-featured Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for the C/C++ programming language. Windows only.
SharpDevelop Free Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for C#, VB.NET and Boo projects on Microsoft’s .NET platform. Open source.

Visual Arts
MS Paint Simple graphics painting program included with most versions of Windows.
KolourPaint Free, easy-to-use paint program for KDE (desktop environment for Unix workstations). Open source and cross-platform.
GIMP Freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. Open source and cross-platform.
Paint.NET Free image and photo editing software for computers running Windows.
Pinta Cross-platform drawing and editing program. Free, modeled after Paint.Net.
Adobe Photoshop Commercial graphics editing program developed and published by Adobe Systems.
Microsoft GIF Animator Easily create and customize animated GIF files for your Web site. GIF animations are based on the GIF89a file format. Freeware.
GraphicsGale Easy-to-use graphic editor. Windows shareware.
Pixen Graphics editor for Mac OS X designed for pixel artists.
Sprite Studio Commercial multimedia authoring tool for creation of images, animations, sounds, fonts, Quicktime movies, and special effects. Mac OS X only, but some content produced can be used on Windows.
MyGUI Library for creating Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) for games and 3D applications. Open source and cross-platform.
